Timothy J Benjamin

After graduating from Sydney University with degrees in Arts and Law, Tim Benjamin was admitted to practice law in NSW in July 1981. After managing a broad range of litigation and commercial matters, which included a high volume of litigated claims for a large insurance company, he partnered in a commercial law practice in Sydney’s CBD in 1987. Tim was responsible for all of the firm’s litigation and commercial matters.

Between 1996 and 2006, Tim acted as an in-house lawyer and manager of a film financing business that executive-produced and financed a wide range of screened entertainment which included feature films, documentaries, TV series and children’s animation before going into practice on his own in 2006.

In 2006 he re-commenced private practice with a patent and trademark colleague, focusing on intellectual property law generally (copyright, trademarks, patents, designs and confidential information) as well as catering for the business law needs of a wide range of SMEs. In 2013 he acquired the firm of Griffith Nicholson Lawyers.

Tim has more than three and a half decades of experience practising commercial law. His experience and dedication has resulted in outstanding outcomes for his clients and enduring relationships both inside and outside the legal fraternity.

Anna Maria Cox

After completing 5 years as a law clerk, Anna Cox was first admitted to practice in 1987. Anna holds a Master of Business Law from the University of Sydney. She is also a trained Mediator and practitioner member of Lawyers Engaged In Alternative Dispute Resolution (LEADR).

Anna has worked for a number of small and medium sized law firms in Sydney and regional areas. She has extensive experience in commercial, estate and general litigation in all NSW courts and tribunals as well as in the federal courts. Her focus is on assisting clients to achieve the best practical outcome at the best price and avoiding litigation in favour of a negotiated settlement wherever possible. Should a dispute find its way to court, Anna works diligently to prepare for court hearings.

Anna has also worked as a costs consultant and brings her expertise in considering the costs implications to all disputes.

Her litigation experience has given Anna a strong awareness of the need for clients to undertake proper estate and business succession planning via a will and other documents. She believes in working collaboratively with clients and their advisors to help make the right estate and succession plans.

Sonal was admitted to practice law in 1984. Sonal’s specialty is intellectual property law including both commercial and enforcement work.

Her passion is to provide high quality legal advice to assist businesses, whatever their size, to grow and compete in their chosen market. Sonal’s expertise includes drafting a wide range of intellectual property (IP) related commercial documents, trade-mark registration work, IP audits, assisting start-ups and the enforcement of IP rights. Sonal has worked for a range of law firms including a number of top and mid-tier firms in Sydney.

Sonal also publishes a weekly IP focused newsletter and writes short plays.

Jake Blundell

Jake specialises in intellectual property, defamation and media law. He has acted in a number of high profile intellectual property litigation and transactional matters for a number of clients.

Jake and Tim Benjamin work closely together. Jake leads the litigation practice at Benjamin Lawyers. Jake has managed defamation and reputation proceedings for authors, politicians and high-profile professionals. He has also acted in a range of insurance and intellectual property litigation cases and represented the commercial interests of clients in the media; for sporting bodies including the NRL and FFA; technology start-ups; theatre and television production companies; musicians and not-for-profit organisations.

Jake acted in the Kookaburra copyright case, Larrikin v EMI Music Australia, relating to the infringement of Kookaburra by the band Men at Work’s hit, Down Under. Jake was also closely involved in the later stages of the long-running NSW Supreme Court and Court of Appeal proceedings, Liu v The Age Company Pty Ltd, which established important principles relative to the extent of freedom of speech and the protection of journalists’ sources.

Jake also provides structuring and compliance advice to charitable organisations, including tax deductible status endorsement (DGR), the establishment of charitable trusts and ancillary funds, and registering cultural organisations.

Between 2011 and 2015 Jake was a guest lecturer for the Master of Arts Management course at the Australian Institute of Music and Sydney Opera House, in defamation, obscenity, privacy and new media law.

Jake is also a volunteer lawyer with the Arts Law Centre of Australia and a member of its Document Review Panel, and a member of the Communications and Media Law Association.
